Five on the First

April 2024
Brea Weinreb

Brea Weinreb’s ‘Flower Paintings’ reflect a momentary pause from her ongoing exploration of queer culture as she turns her gaze toward flowers arranged and gifted to her by her studio neighbor Amelia, a renowned florist in Downtown Los Angeles’ Flower District. Bits of the artist’s studio occasionally make their way into the frame, including art historic reproductions and pieces of figurative paintings, though Weinreb’s attention remains focused on the texture, color and rhythm of the arrangements themselves. Applying the same vibrancy and fluidity she uses to portray queer bodies, Weinreb’s floral bodies vibrate with life and the indulgent sense of play felt throughout her work.
